Jumping Moose. It was about 5:15 in the morning when I was awakened by a single gun shot. It seems a moose walked by my tent just outside of bear fence. Then, based on the foot prints in the sand, it seems like it looked at the target we had up for gun practice and decided it didn't want to go that way. Next, it seems to have looked at the HOV and decided it didn't want to walk that way. So, being not to smart, it decided the only other way off the beach and back into the woods was to "STEP OVER" our bear fence with out damaging it. Which it did! Then, it walked over bumped in to serge's tent and gave a grunt and a snort which woke serge up. He slowly opened the inside window to look out thru the mosquito screen and saw this giant moose butt slowly coming towards his window. He paniced a little and thought the moose was going to kick the tent like a horse or mule would do so, he grabed his gun and fired thru the window. This was the shot I heard and caused me to come running out with the rifle. All I was able to see was Serge standing outside of his tent, gun still smoking and about 50 feet a way was a moose looking back at us as if to say, What the hell is wrong with your guys. Then is slowly walked away.
Seems what the moose was actually doing is -jumping- over the fence but, because of the shot, which also startled the moose, it took off running like a race horse!
Good news is Serge is a terrible shot and completly missed the moose and no damage was done to tent, fence, Serge or the Moose!

The HOV floating in the water as serge is dredging near the middle of the river on a claim that we hope will produce some good gold.
One week later a rain/flood made the water come up and -none- of the rocks by the dredge were above water anymore. water Came up around 2-3 feet.
Dredging on the claim named: Hot 8

Two views of the 10 inch dredge used by the gold camp. It has a built in Grill and Hot water shower. It uses a motor from a small car.
In the background is a 6 inch Proline dredge like mine they use to test a spot before brining in the "Ten"

We were eating lunch at the landing site of the new "official" high above the water Storage/camp site that we have rented from the BLM.
As we ate lunch this small lone caribou came up to with in a few feet of us. if you watch the video carfully you can see it in the movie.

Serge, our new helper and Nancy. There are two pictures and one movie. They are cleaning up some mushrooms that serge found. Serge seems very knowledgeable about these as when he found these growing in the woods he was like a kid in a candy store as he knew how rare they are.
Seems he often flys over to paris just to have a $500.00 a plate of these. the plate is buckwheat and mushrooms with onions.
(PS: Serge is a US citizen for the last 40 years but is from Findland. Currently he lives in Key West Fl.)

Putting on the wet suit hood just be for heading out to dredge for the day (mid June).

A picture from the day after we got here in mid May.These are most but not all of the parts for the dredge

After one of the rains i went out to check on the dredge and found this log jam.
The water was high enough during the flood so that the dredge was floating this far up on the shore at the time of the jam.
However The guy dredging below us had worse problems.
His dredge had broken loose in the storm and floated down the river about 5 miles before it got grounded in a shallow spot.

Another view of the log jam.

Another moose we saw early one morning from our North Fork camp.
